The United Church of Christ adopted a resolution at its synod in Cleveland, Ohio Tuesday evening to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. The leadership of two other mainline Protestant denominations, the Episcopal Church of Salt Lake City and the Mennonites in Kansas City, are scheduled to vote this week on similar resolutions by Wednesday. Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement reacting to the UCC move, calling it “immoral” and adding “People of faith and religion should work to facilitate peace and not try to hurt the side [Israel] aspiring for peace.” Meanwhile, analysts said they expected the real economic impact on Israel to be negligible.
